Study to Work

Some international students who study in New Zealand on a Student Visa status may be eligible to transition to Work Visa status in New Zealand under Study to Work Category. In order to be eligible to apply under Study to Work Visa Category, such students must have successfully completed qualification(s) in New Zealand that would qualify for immigration points under the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC).
Post-Study Work Visa (Open)
International students who have completed qualification(s) in New Zealand may be eligible for a Post-Study Work Visa (Open) for up to 12 months duration.
Eligibility for a Post-Study Work Visa (Open):

• Successful completion of qualification(s) in New Zealand, in accordance with requirements of Study to Work Category
• Apply within 3 months (or within 6 months for Doctoral qualification holders) after the end of student visa validity
• Provide proof of funds in the amount of at least NZ$4,200 for personal expenses during 12-month stay in New Zealand

Post-Study Work Visa (Employer Assisted)
International students in New Zealand who obtain an offer of employment that is relevant to their qualification(s), they may be eligible for a Work Visa for either:

• 2 years; or
• 3 years (if international student is working towards getting a membership or registration from a professional association in New Zealand which may require over 2 years of relevant practical work experience.

International students must submit an application for a Post-Study Work Visa (Employer Assisted) within 3 months (or within 6 months for doctoral qualification holders) after the end of student visa validity, unless the applicant has a valid Post-Study Work Visa (Open).
